Jared Matthews was born in Houston, Texas and received his early ballet training there under the guidance of Victoria Vittum and Gilbert Rome. Mr. Matthews was awarded a full scholarship to study at North Carolina School of the Arts summer program as well as the School of American Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. While attending American Ballet Theatre’s Summer Intensive Program in 2001 as a Coca Cola Scholarship winner, he was invited to join ABT’s Studio Company. Mr. Matthews joined ABT as an apprentice in 2002 and as a member of the corps de ballet in April 2003. He was appointed a Soloist in August 2007.
His repertoire with American Ballet Theatre is includes Albrecht and Peasent Pas de Deux in Giselle, Franz in Coppélia, Lensky in Onegin, Lankendem in Le Corsaire, Espada in Don Quixote, Lysander in The Dream, the Turning Boy in Études, Gaston in Lady of the Camellias, Camille in The Merry Widow, The Prince/Grande Pas de Deux in The Nutcracker(Ratmansky), Cassio in Othello, the Head Wrangler in Rodeo, Mercutio and Benvolio in Romeo and Juliet, the Bluebird in The Sleeping Beauty, Benno and Von Rothbart (Ballroom) in Swan Lake, Gurn in La Sylphide, Aminta and Orion in Sylvia, the Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux, Thaïs Pas de Deux and leading roles in Black Tuesday, Brief Fling, Clear, Dark Elegies, Désir, Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes, Duets, Gong, In the Upper Room, The Leaves Are Fading, Overgrown Path, Petite Mort, Sechs Tänze, Seven Sonatas, Sinfonietta, Some Assembly Required, Symphonic Variations, Symphony # 9, The Tempest, Troika and workwithinwork. He created leading roles in C. to C. (Close to Chuck), Glow – Stop, One of Three, and Thirteen Diversions.
In July of 2014, Mr. Matthews joined Houston Ballet as a First Soloist. He was promoted to the rank of Principle Dancer in June of 2015.
His repertory with the company is Romeo and Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet (Welch), Prince Florimund in The Sleeping Beauty (Stevenson), Solar in La Bayadere (Welch),Lescaut in Manon, Lucentio in The Taming of the Shrew, Lysander in A Midsummer Night's Dream (Neumeier), Tony in West Side Story Suite, Albrecht in Giselle (Welch), and leading roles in Paquita, One and One, Velocity, Tapestry, The Letter V, Zodiac, and Dyad 1929.
As a guest artist Mr. Matthews has appeared with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Les Ballet GranDiva, and the Noriko Hara Ballet Company. He has appeared in Closing Gala of the Mariinsky Ballet Festival, Hopes and Pride Gala, Prix de Lausanne Gala, New National Ballet Gala, Chicago Dancing Festival, Roberto Bolle and Friends, Santa Fe Ballet Festival, and West Virginia Dancing Festival. Mr. Matthews appeared on the popular television show So You Think You Can Dance in a live broadcast dancing the Pas de Deux from Don Quixote. Mr. Matthews competed in the 2007 Erik Bruhn Competition representing ABT. He danced the Sleeping Beauty Pas de Deux as well as the last movement of Petit Mort. Mr. Matthews has taught technique and partnering classes for the David Howard Foundation, Company Classes at ABT, West Virginia Dance Festival, at workshops in Japan, and at dance schools in the United States. Mr. Matthews was a student and protege of David Howard. He is a member of the SpaceCraft Entertainment Agency.
